Agra mayor quits BJP, joins SP

India Gazette (IANS) Friday 20th January, 2012

Agra Mayor Anjula Singh Mahaur Friday joined the Samajwadi Party, after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) denied her ticket to contest the Uttar Pradesh elections from the Agra South seat.

A former mayor, Kishori Lal Mahor also defected from the BJP to SP along with some local leaders.

Although Mahaur has told media persons that she will not contest elections, she would be an important rabble rouser for the Samajwadi Party and campaign hard to defeat the BJP candidates.

A few important previous office bearers of the Samajwadi Party who had deserted Mulayam Singh Yadav after the Amar Singh episode returned to the fold Friday.

Uttar Pradesh will elect a new assembly in February-March.
