The national capital saw the season's filthiest day Tuesday in terms of air quality..
A thick blanket of smog enveloped the national capital Tuesday which saw the air pollution level reach at its highest this winter, the ministry of earth sciences said here Tuesday.
The level of PM 2.5 reached to a whopping 271 microgrames - 4.5 times the level considered safe for humans, said Gufran Beig, project director at System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research(SAFAR).
SAFAR comes under ministry of earth sciences.
PM is particulate matter less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter which remains suspended in the air.
"The level is predicted to be further increasing for next two days and likely to touch 300 microgram /m3 Wednesday, the highest level in the year 2014," he added.
"This level is even higher than what was witnessed on Diwali this year," said Sunil Peshin who heads Environmental Monitoring and Research Centre at India Meteorological Department.
Fireworks are let off on Diwali in India.
"Fine particulates can play a role in causing serious illnesses and death because they are small enough to be inhaled deep into the lungs. Once fine particles are in the lungs, they can affect the heart, blood vessels, and lungs," an official statement.
