KARTARPUR, Pakistan - Since its inception in November 2019, Kartarpur has become a point of connection and reunion for people whom Partition has separated in 1947. It has reunited old friends and family, most recently two brothers who embraced each other after 74 years apart.
A video of their meeting has gone viral on social media, and it has everyone teary-eyed, if not outright weeping.
Muhammad Siddique, 80, and Habib, 78, were separated during Partition 74 years ago. On the joyous occasion of their reunion, they hugged, sobbed, and garlanded each other.
In 1947, Siddique's brother and sister went to his grandparents' residence with his mother. "A civil war was occurring at the time, and my father and other family members decided to flee immediately to save lives, and we traveled to Pakistan," he explained.
From the Indian state of Punjab, Habib described it as the happiest day of his life.
Siddique, a resident of Phugaran village on the fringes of Faisalabad district, claimed he contacted a Canadian Sikh social worker two years ago. He claimed that the social worker assisted in reuniting the two brothers.
Netizens wondered why the brothers had to wait so long to meet. They'd both assumed the other was dead, and it was only because of a group that brings people together from all over the world that they were able to meet. They found each other two years ago but had to wait for the pandemic to bring them together.
Punjabi Lehar is an organization "attempting to bridge the divide caused by the partition of 1947 between the people of East and West Punjab." The entire reunion video is available on their YouTube channel.
