SANTIAGO, Chile: Easter Island, one of Chile's most important tourist attractions, will reopen to visitors on August 1, the government has announced.
Access to Easter Island, located over 2,000 miles from the coast of Chile and boasting of UNESCO World Heritage Site status, was restricted at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The government has also vowed to improve the health infrastructure to handle any coronavirus cases on the remote island, known for its stone Moai statues.
Residents of the island had earlier protested the presence of tourists when the pandemic began in March 2020, even taking over the airport to stop flights arriving from the mainland.
To reopen the island, the government has held discussions with the island population, asking them to stop occupying the airport, while it agreed to implement reparation and historical recognition measures.
