New Delhi [India], March 20 (ANI): Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta on Tuesday stated that the law should take its course after the Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) filed a First Information Report (FIR) against former Delhi minister Satyendar Jain in connection with alleged corruption and bribery related to the Rs 571 crore CCTV project in the national capital.
Speaking to ANI, Gupta said, 'Law should do its work, and by political blame game, we somewhere try to obstruct the action.'
Reacting to the development, Delhi BJP Chief Virendra Sachdeva claimed that Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal would also be found involved in the alleged scam.
He further alleged that Kejriwal and Jain were the masterminds behind the irregularities.
According to Madhur Verma, Joint Commissioner of Police and Head of ACB, liquidated damages worth Rs 16 crore were allegedly waived arbitrarily in exchange for a Rs seven crore bribe.
An FIR was registered against Jain under Section 17A of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, after prior approval from the competent authority.ACB officials stated, 'Bribery of Rs seven crore was allegedly arranged to be paid to Satyendar Jain to waive off the Rs 16 crore penalty for delays in CCTV installation.'
Despite previous delays, Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) was awarded additional contracts for 1.4 lakh cameras under the project. The alleged bribe was reportedly facilitated through contractors who benefited from these additional orders.
Officials also claimed that the project was executed in a 'shoddy manner,' with many cameras remaining dysfunctional at the time of handover. Payments were allegedly inflated to accommodate bribes involving multiple vendors.
The ACB has already questioned a BEL officer, who confirmed the allegations and provided a detailed complaint. Documents from the Public Works Department (PWD) and BEL are currently being examined for further evidence. (ANI)
